How South Carolina paycheck taxes work

Your South Carolina paycheck has three main withholdings: federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare, and South Carolina state income tax. South Carolina has no local income taxes and no state payroll deductions.

The WH-1603F formula subtracts $5,000 for each SC W-4 allowance and a standard deduction equal to 10% of your wages, capped at $7,500, then applies 0% on the first $3,640, 3% to $18,230, and 6% above, for every filing status. Employees who claim zero allowances get neither the allowance nor the standard deduction in withholding.

South Carolina paycheck FAQ

Didn't South Carolina change its income tax for 2026?

Yes. Act 110, signed March 30, 2026, sets 1.99% on the first $29,999 of taxable income and 5.21% above for tax year 2026, with a new deduction that phases out with income. The Department of Revenue has said it will adjust the withholding tables but had not published them as of September 2026, so paychecks still follow the 3% and 6% formula shown here. The difference settles when you file.

How is the South Carolina standard deduction calculated in withholding?

10% of your gross wages, up to $7,500 a year, as long as you claim at least one allowance. At $60,000 that is $6,000; at $75,000 and above it is the full $7,500.
