How Indiana paycheck taxes work
Five tax lines come out of an Indiana paycheck: federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500), Medicare (1.45%), Indiana state income tax, and Indiana county income tax, which your employer withholds on the same form and the same taxable wages as the state line. Indiana has no employee-paid payroll premiums, so any other deduction on your stub is your own election: 401(k), health premiums, HSA, and similar benefits.
Departmental Notice #1 annualizes your pay, subtracts $1,000 for each personal exemption on WH-4 line 5 and $1,500 for each qualifying dependent on line 6, and multiplies what is left by 2.95%. The WH-4 also allows an extra $1,500 for a dependent claimed for the first time (line 7) and $3,000 per adopted child (line 8); this calculator leaves those two out. Bonuses and other non-periodic payments are withheld at 2.95% plus the county rate with no exemptions subtracted.
County tax is set once a year: the county where you lived on January 1 applies for all of 2026, even if you move, and someone who lived outside Indiana on January 1 pays the rate of their principal work county. All 92 counties levy a tax, from 0.50% (Porter) to 3.00% (Randolph); the hint under the field lists the four largest. Look up your county in Departmental Notice #1 and type the percentage into the Indiana county income tax field. Counties can change rates each January and October.
The state rate fell from 3.00% to 2.95% on January 1, 2026, and drops to 2.90% in 2027 under the HB 1001 schedule; six counties (Carroll, Grant, Greene, Howard, Shelby, Union) raised rates the same day, and exemption amounts did not change. Residents of Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin pay only their home state's income tax on Indiana wages, but Indiana county tax for the work county still applies. Nonresidents who work in Indiana 30 days or fewer are exempt on Form WH-4AFF.

Indiana paycheck FAQ
How much is taken out of a paycheck in Indiana?
Federal income tax, Social Security at 6.2%, Medicare at 1.45%, Indiana state tax at a flat 2.95% of annualized wages after $1,000 per exemption and $1,500 per dependent, and county tax of 0.50% to 3.00% on the same amount. The quick answer above shows a single filer on $60,000 paid biweekly with no county rate entered; add your county rate to complete the picture.
What is the Indiana income tax rate for 2026?
A flat 2.95% for every filing status, down from 3.00% in 2025. House Bill 1001 schedules a further cut to 2.90% for 2027. Your county adds 0.50% to 3.00% on top, so the combined state and county rate on an Indiana paycheck runs from 3.45% to 5.95%. Some calculators still apply 3.00% or an older county table; this page uses Departmental Notice #1 effective January 1, 2026.
Do I pay Indiana county tax where I live or where I work?
Where you lived on January 1. That county's rate applies to the whole year even if you move, and it is withheld with your state tax on the same taxable wages. If you lived outside Indiana on January 1, the county of your principal workplace applies. Marion County (Indianapolis) is 2.02% for 2026; the hint under the county field lists Hamilton, Allen, and Lake as well, and Departmental Notice #1 has all 92.
How many exemptions should I claim on the Indiana WH-4?
The number the WH-4 worksheet gives you. In withholding, each line 5 exemption removes $1,000 of annual wages and each line 6 dependent removes $1,500, and both cut state and county tax because the two rates share one taxable amount. Enter the counts in the Indiana exemptions and Dependents fields. Lines 7 and 8 ($1,500 for a first-year dependent, $3,000 per adopted child) are outside this calculator.
How are bonuses taxed in Indiana?
A bonus or other non-periodic payment is withheld at the flat 2.95% state rate plus your county rate, with no exemption amounts subtracted, alongside the 22% federal flat rate and FICA. Because Indiana's regular rate is already 2.95%, a bonus carries the same state percentage as ordinary wages; the only difference is that the $1,000 and $1,500 exemptions do not reduce it. This site's bonus calculator applies 2.95% for Indiana.
I live in Kentucky or Ohio and work in Indiana. Do I pay Indiana tax?
No Indiana state income tax. Under Information Bulletin #28, residents of Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin pay only their home state's income tax on Indiana wages. Indiana county tax is outside the agreement, so the rate of your principal Indiana work county is still withheld. Nonresidents from any state who work in Indiana 30 days or fewer in the year can claim exemption on Form WH-4AFF.
