How Rhode Island paycheck taxes work

Your Rhode Island paycheck has four main withholdings: federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare, Rhode Island state income tax, and temporary disability and caregiver insurance. Rhode Island has no local income taxes.

The formula subtracts $1,000 for each RI W-4 allowance (up to 10) and applies one schedule for every filing status: 3.75% on the first $82,050, 4.75% to $186,450, and 5.99% above. One quirk: once annual wages pass $290,800, the allowances disappear entirely. TDI takes 1.1% of wages up to $100,000, at most $1,100 a year. Bonuses paid separately are withheld at 5.99%.

Rhode Island paycheck FAQ

What is the TDI deduction on my Rhode Island paycheck?

Temporary disability and caregiver insurance, paid entirely by employees: 1.1% of wages up to $100,000 in 2026 (down from 1.3% on $89,200), so at most $1,100 a year.

Why did my Rhode Island allowances stop counting?

Rhode Island phases the withholding exemption out as a cliff: if your annual wages exceed $290,800, the $1,000-per-allowance deduction becomes zero.
